Could your child's swimsuit color be putting them at risk? These colors were rated safest

As families flock to pools and lakes to beat the summer heat, water safety experts are urging parents to think carefully when picking out children's swimwear. Two 2021 visibility test studies performed by ALIVE Solutions Inc., a company that specializes in aquatic safety, reveal that the color of a child's swimsuit can play a crucial role in spotting them underwater. The first ALIVE Solutions visibility test study reveals how different colors of fabric appear in a pool with a light colored bottom. The top photo in each section shows the appearance of various colors underwater, while the bottom images demonstrate their appearance with surface agitation. 'Our bottom two colors are white and light blue (check out how they disappear) and our top choices would be neon pink and neon orange,' reads the ALIVE Solutions Blog post sharing the results. 'Although the darker colors show up on a light pool bottom they can often be dismissed for a pile of leaves, dirt, or a shadow so I tend to stay away from those colors when possible.' The second visibility test study reveals how the same fabric colors appear in 18 inches of lake water with a brownish grey bottom on a partly sunny day. The first row of images reveals the appearance of colors on the water's surface, whereas the second row demonstrates color visibility from a shore-level perspective. The third row of images reveals color visibility from 'a slightly elevated perspective — simulating standing on a boat/dock view.' The colors with the highest visibility in this test study were neon yellow, green and orange. 'White came in fourth place, but appeared more to be a light reflection or clouds on the surface and wouldn't stand out in a crowd … so personally wouldn't be on our list as a top choice,' reads the ALIVE Solutions Blog post sharing the results. 'Also remember … the bright and contrasting colors help visibility, but it doesn't matter what color your kids are wearing if you aren't supervising effectively and actively watching!'
